Dilemmas in Modern Science and Technology

Dilemma: A situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more alternatives, especially equally undesirable ones.

Science and technology are involved in many dilemmas we face in the modern world, for example in efforts to prevent terrorist attacks, medical ethics, and the design of more fuel efficient vehicles. In a 2-3 page paper, draw on your studies in this course and on your own personal experience to discuss a dilemma that you care about. Your paper should address the following points:

1. What is the issue?
2. Is this a case of (a) a group simply not "getting it"; (b) gaps in existing knowledge; and/or (c) two or more opposing camps?
3. What is your view of the dilemma and possible avenues toward a resolution?

You can of course draw on or react to our classroom discussions as well as your readings throughout the semester.

Please turn in a printed copy of your paper at the beginning of class on Monday, April 27. As always you would be wise to consult the keys for writing a successful essay.
