HHS 312: Second Essay

Your second writing assignment is a 4-6 page essay on a topic of your choice. If you would like suggestions, you should contact me.

This assignment is slightly different from the first essay in the sense that you will have three deadlines that will help you focus on the process of writing and rewriting, thinking and rethinking.

DEADLINE 1: MONDAY APRIL 13
- You need to send me (via email) your essay topic.
- 25% of your grade for this paper

DEADLINE 2: MONDAY APRIL 20
- You need to send me (again via email) your essay outline. The outline should use something like the Roman numeral system (i.e., I, A, 1, a). Each paragraph (intro, body paragraphs, and conclusion) should have its own section in your outline.
- 25% of your grade for this paper

DEADLINE 3: MONDAY APRIL 27
- The final draft of your essay is due, printed and stapled, at the beginning of class.
- 50% of your grade for this paper

Here are some suggestions:

1. You should have some sources for your essay in mind when you propose the topic.

2. The essay should deal with some aspect of American technology. You should put it in the context of at least one of the major themes we have discussed throughout the semester.

3. Your essay should be double-spaced, using 12-point font and reasonable margins. It should have your name, the date, and a title. It should have a clear thesis statement and a persuasive argument.

4. You should use either MLA-style citations OR Chicago Manual OR Turabian--your choice, all I ask is that you be consistent. Your essay should include an annotated bibliography--in other words, for each entry that you list you should include a sentence or two about the source and, if it is an online source, why you find it trustworthy.
